Design Ideas for the Floor of a Stair Landing
Ceramic or Porcelain Tile
- Ceramic and porcelain tile can be incorporated into your floor design. Ceramic and porcelain tiles are common flooring options because they are well-constructed and have waterproof qualities. Unless something is dropped on the tile, they generally do not crack or break. Apply grout sealer between the tiles to ensure that the entire area is waterproof and that no mold or mildew can form on or around the tiles. Select neutral earth-tone ceramic or porcelain tile colors such as beige, butternut, taupe, off-white or mocha to blend with the rest of your home design.
- Select hardwood for the floor of your stair landing if other rooms in your home have hardwood floors. Opt for light-colored woods like oak, pine and maple if the surface area is small and you want to expand the visual appearance of the space. Choose dark-colored hardwood like mahogany, walnut or cherry if the landing is spacious or if the dark colors blend with the rest of the hardwood used in your home design. Apply protective treatment to the hardwood flooring since a stair landing is a high-traffic area.
Slate or Stone Tile
- Install slate or stone tile on your stair landing for a modern and contemporary home design. Slate and stone tiles are constructed from strong materials that can sustain a large amount of traffic and do not require excessive cleaning or maintenance. Slate and stone tiles are advantageous if you want to add pattern and design to your landing area. These tiles usually come in earth-tone colors such as gray, tan or beige, so they harmonize with most decorative motifs.
- In recent years, bamboo flooring has become increasingly popular. The resilient nature of bamboo, its warm natural color and its low-maintenance characteristics make it a possible option for flooring on a stair landing. Bamboo flooring resembles hardwood but its lack of wood grain variations and modeled appearance make it a unique addition to a home design. Bamboo flooring wears well over time and is well-suited to a high-traffic area such as a stair landing.
